FAQs
“I like a certain mobile I see here in your products page, but can I get it in a different color, and maybe a little bigger?
Yes, and it’s easier than you think. Usually, color changes don’t add much (or anything) to the price. Size changes, up or down, generally make the price go up or down proportionately. Contact us to discuss your needs.
“Do the mobiles come fully assembled?”
They come “mostly assembled”. We disconnect at a couple locations so that it can fit into a reasonably sized box. All you need to do is connect hook A to loop A, and hook B to hook B. It’s easy and fun. I tell everyone to contact me if they have any trouble, and hardly anyone ever does. But we can meet on Zoom or Facetime if you need my help walking you through anything.
“Where are you located? Can I visit the studio?”
Napa, CA. You can come visit the studio if you want, there’s always something interesting hanging up in here. We’re in the most beautiful wine country in the hemisphere, so come check out the studio in the morning, then go out and do some wine tasting or just check out the gorgeous vineyards. Contact us before you come so we can tidy up a bit - there’s bits of metal just all over the place most of the time.
“Can you make a Calder replica?”
Nope, all Calder’s works are copyrighted, and besides, we wouldn’t feel right copying another artist’s work. But, if you’ve got a particular size, color, layout, or general vibe that you’d like us to aim for, we can totally do that. Contact us to discuss what you’re looking for.
“What is lead time for custom work?”
Depends on the size. Sometimes just a few days for a simple change. Maybe 2-3 weeks for a medium sized custom job. Maybe a couple months for something bigger that would involve some design iterations or special materials. If we’re talking a big installation, could be 6 months or more.
“What’s your procedure for large installations? How do we get this started?”
Just call or write, and let’s get talking about the space and what you’re looking for in general. We’d love to get pictures (or renderings) of the space if you’ve got them. We don’t think that phone calls are old-school, we think they’re a great way to plow through the initial phase of finding out what you’re looking to do, and explaining what we think would work.
After that, we’d go through a series of design sketches and material options. We hone the design until it’s perfect, then we lock in the design, request down payment, and proceed to construction. We build, ship, and (if requested) install.
Sometimes, if the design phase is predicted to be lengthy, we may request a small down payment for that phase.
“Can you come install a big mobile?”
Yes, happy to. We generally charge for travel costs, and a work dayrate. If this is for a large installation, these costs may already be a part of the total package.
“I have this old mobile, probably from another artist. It looks really old, can you reassemble/fix it?”
Usually, yes. Send it, or bring it over here, and we’ll see what we can do.
“How long have you been doing this?”
Our lead designer, Scott Haycock, has been building mobiles for nearly 30 years. Our other designers and fabricators have been perfecting their different abilities anywhere between 5 and 35 years.
